Having fun with golf balls...

Whilst on the shooting range yesterday (16th July 2010) and after testing ammunition, I decided to add a little spice to the day by stringing up a couple of golf balls at 100 meters.

'After being shot at 3,030 feet per second, I expected them to disintegrate'…

Here's the spec. of the rounds I used;

Rifle - 32inch Trueflight barrell, Barnard action, McMillan A5 tactical stock,12-42x56 scope.
Calibre - .308
Bullet - 168 grain Berger hollow point boat tail, VLD's
Powder - 45.5 grains of Varget
Velocity - 3,030 feet per second

I fired one round at each golf ball, and after each shot they disappeared from my scope's view.  With each 168 grain bullet hitting the golf ball at 3,030 feet per second, I presumed that they would have disintegrated!

I walked to the end of the range and to my amazement found them on the floor with only one hole in each ball. No exit hole… Wow… The bullet was still inside it...

Have a look at the pics I took below. Maybe they should start using golf ball technology for our troops body armour….

Image of .308 calibre round with an un-used 168 grain bullet next to the 2nd golf ball after I shot it. This must be an older design of golf ball. Also, the golf ball spewed all the innards out about half an hour after I shot it, Strange... (Notice another very small exit hole on the left of the ball).
