Originally photographed by Steve Thornton in 1990 capturing the life of Grimsby fish docks prior to new EU legislation coming into force which changed the character of the fish docks forever.
This unique collection of images are now published here for the first time and will be exhibited at a special inaugural venue in Grimsby where the FISH TOWN image collection was produced. Before the whole collection goes on a UK gallery tour.
Exhibition dates to be announced.
The 1990 exhibition sold out in 3 days, and was covered by the BBC, ITV and national radio. The collection was revived by Steve Thornton in 2020. He extended the narrative by re-visiting and photographing Grimsby fish docks, the new fish market, the Kazbar and the remaining fish companies. Documenting the life of Grimsby Fish Dock as it entered a new livelihood without EU rules due to a winning Brexit vote. Some companies went on to become multi-million pound corporate players, but unfortunately, many never survived.
The 1990 image collection are the very last photographs documenting Grimsby Fish Docks in all their glory.
The 2020 image collection documents the new fish and processing industry compared to 30 years ago. It’s like a “mephitic shanty town to a seafood science lab” Steve Thornton. November/2020.
